Electric School Bus Roadmap and Guidebook is Now Available–NYSED

  • All new school buses purchased after 2027 must be Zero Emission vehicles, and all school buses in New York State must be Zero Emission vehicles by 2035.
  • NYSERDA has now released a New York State Electric School Bus Roadmap and several sections of The Electric School Bus Guidebook.
  • The Roadmap presents an outline for the electrification of school buses in New York State, discussing the benefits, challenges, and actionable policy recommendations.
  • The Guidebook will serve to help districts and service contractors with navigating the transition, including but not limited to bus and charger purchasing, site planning and utility upgrades, workforce training, and available funding programs to support the transition to Zero Emission Busing.
  • Most district expenses related to Zero Emission busing are primarily eligible for Transportation Aid, however, in some instances, Building Aid may be applicable.
  • All Transportation Aid related to capital expenses for Zero Emission Busing is to be amortized over an extended 12-year timeline.
  • NYSED has prepared a Zero Emission Bus Charging Infrastructure Q&A Document to help answer frequently asked questions.
  • NYSED has also developed a Zero Emission Busing Aid Estimator Tool to assist in district planning and budgeting.
