NYLJ: Children’s Centers at Courts Are Hit Hard by Budget Cuts

A program that provides what the courts have described as “a safe, supportive haven” in the courthouse for children whose parents are involved in legal proceedings has fallen victim to budget cuts. Administrators this week mandated substantial cuts in the funding and hours of operation of 34 children’s centers. The hours of Family Court centers will be halved, while those outside Family Court will be eliminated entirely.

Budget Deal Cuts $15.8M From Legal Services The bipartisan deal on the federal budget includes a $15.8 million midyear cut for the Legal Services Corp., according to new details released on Tuesday. The cut is smaller than the $70 million that House Republicans proposed to take in February from the Legal Services Corp., which is the nation’s largest funding source for civil legal aid to the poor. Still, program officials had hoped to avoid any cut because demand for legal aid has increased during the economic downturn.
